Installation Options

We generally recommend the traditional “sand set” installation method for all Nantucket Paver blocks. With this method, you have greater control over your base and easier replacement of blocks that may become damaged over time. We do not recommend using Bluestone dust or Quarry dust as a base for our products.

Sand Set

1 1⁄2″ Rivenstone Block
1″ Course Bedding Sand
4″ – 6″ processed gravel or other free-draining material (compacted)
Compacted Soil

MORTARED

1 1⁄2″ Rivenstone Block
1″ Mortar Bed
4″ Reinforced Concrete Pad
Compacted Soil or Other Suitable Base

In tests conducted by an independent laboratory in accordance with ASTM standards, our products have consistently exceeded the performance measures shown below:

  • ASTM C1194 Compressive Strength of Architectural Cast Stone: 6000psi
  • ASTM C1195 Absorption of Architectural Cast Stone: Less than 5% absorption
PAVER BASE PANELS (of any type of material)
Using Paver Base Panel (of any type of material) is not recommended for our products and is outlined in both our installation guidelines https://nantucketpavers.com/installations/ .  Our recommended installation method consists of 4–6 inches of compacted 3/8″ crushed stone with a 1″–1.5″ paver sand setting bed, which is designed to allow proper drainage. Paver Base panels can restrict drainage and trap water beneath the pavers. As noted in our warranty, installations using base panels void coverage due to the high risk of damaging concrete pavers/blocks.
